csf (config server firewall) is a software firewall which is widely used on linux servers to protect it from brute force, invalid login attempts, SMTP blocks, DOS attacks, etc. Web hosting provider all over the globe rely on csf firewall. It works with iptables in preventing your server.
csf firewall is compatible with Linux distros & is easy to use and install. You can enable/block ports, allow/block/ignore the IP access & perform many more tweaks with csf firewall.
Installing csf requires root privileges & needs to be installed via SSH or console.
# cd /usr/local/src/
# wget http://www.configserver.com/free/csf.tgz
# tar -zxf csf.tgz
# cd csf*
# ./install.sh
It will install csf firewall. If your server has cPanel OR directadmin as the control panel installed, you can execute install.cpanel.sh OR install.directadmin.sh respectively.
Once installed, it is always under TESTING mode. Open the file /etc/csf/csf.conf & find for “TESTING”. Set it to 0 to enable it.
Restart csf firewall & the server will be behind software firewall.
